Steel cladding has become one of the defining looks of modern architecture in Calgary. Beyond its clean, bold appearance, steel is one of the toughest exterior wall materials available, standing up to hail, wind, fire, and time with very little upkeep.
Steel cladding is virtually indestructible in Southern Alberta. Resistant to severe hail impacts, wind debris, rot, insects, and UV degradation, steel siding provides a 50+ year maintenance-free exterior wall solution.
Steel thickness is measured in gauge, and the lower the number, the thicker the steel. A 22-gauge panel is heavier and more rigid than a 26-gauge panel. Thicker steel resists denting better and stays flatter across wide panels, which is why we often recommend heavier gauges for commercial facades, high-traffic areas, and walls that take the brunt of hail and wind. Lighter gauges can work well for accents and protected areas where cost is a bigger factor.
No cladding is completely waterproof. Wind-driven rain and melting snow can always find small paths behind the panels. A rainscreen design leaves a narrow air gap between the steel and the weather barrier on the wall. Any water that gets behind the cladding drains down and out, and air moving through the gap helps the wall dry. In Calgary's freeze-thaw climate, that drying ability is a big part of what keeps the wall structure healthy for decades.

Steel works well as the main wall material, but it's just as effective as an accent. Many Calgary homes combine steel cladding with James Hardie fiber cement, stone, or wood-look aluminum panels to create contrast and visual interest. Steel can highlight a front entry, a garage, a feature wall, or the upper storey of a home, while other materials cover the rest.
Pricing depends on the total wall area, the panel profile, steel gauge and finish, the amount of trim needed around windows, doors, and corners, whether a rainscreen system with furring or z-girts is used, the condition of the existing wall, and the height and access around the building. Will steel cladding rust? Galvanized steel with a factory-baked PVDF finish is designed to resist rust and corrosion. Scratches should be touched up to keep the protection intact.
Does steel siding make a home louder? Installed over insulation and a solid wall, steel cladding is not noticeably louder inside than other siding types.
Can steel cladding dent? Very heavy hail or impacts can dent thinner panels. Heavier gauges are much more dent resistant, which is why gauge selection matters.
Is steel cladding hot in the summer? The baked-on finish reflects much of the sun's heat, and the rainscreen air gap behind the panels helps keep heat away from the wall.
